Rehab Aftercare in Texas
Keeping clients engaged and empowered throughout every stage and phase of recovery.
Addiction treatment is an essential first step toward an individual building a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle. When an individual invites themselves into that space, important tools are utilized such as coping skills and methods to prevent relapse. Treatment facilities provide the individual an ideal environment for the addict to stay sober and clean when surrounded by countless support from staff and peers at rehab aftercare.
The true test of a person’s recovery begins when they graduate from the program and leave the rehab facility. It is easier to decline alcohol and drugs when living in a place geared to the very act of saying no. The act of continually turning down something that was once loved is an extremely difficult task to maneuver each day. However, the challenge isn’t impossible.

Why Are Addiction Aftercare Programs Important In Treatment?
Aftercare is a pivotal part of our client’s recovery process. Instead of an addict completely leaving the supportive treatment environment, aftercare has the potential to effectively transition an individual into a more intensive program. Aftercare is the part of the program that comes after the addict finishes their higher level of treatment.
The addiction aftercare programs are considered collective plans aimed to support struggling individuals during the early stages of recovery. One of the primary goals during this process is preventing the addict from relapsing while they are working on their new life. It’s important to note that attending treatment for a couple of months does not cure drug and alcohol addiction.
When an individual suffers from alcohol and drug addiction, it’s essential to remember that it’s a chronic brain disorder that requires ongoing management and care. Treatment centers specialize in equipping clients with tools that can be utilized to enhance an addict to stay clean and sober one day at a time. It’s best to think of aftercare as another avenue of continual support once the individual leaves the treatment facility.
Where Do These Fit In The Continuum Of Care?
Continuum of care stands for a substance abuse rehabilitation treatment center that offers different levels of care aimed to treat addiction. It works as a treatment system at a stage or level most appropriate to the individual’s needs.
A helpful continuum of care includes the following:
- Client’s records
- Successful transfer of the client
- Treatment principle across the seven levels of care
The continuum of care includes the following processes:
- Interventions
- Detox
- Residential Treatment
- Partial Hospitalization Program
(PHP) is the most intense outpatient treatment program that will include group and individual therapy. The services are typically 5 days a week, 4-6 hours a day.
- Intensive Outpatient Program
(IOP) focuses on mental health care and addiction. The appointments are two or more a week, which lasts for 3 hours.
- Outpatient Treatment
- Aftercare Programs
What Are The Main Goals of Addiction Aftercare Programs?
Rehab aftercare exists to support an individual in recovery with unique access to services and programs. The main goal of an aftercare program for substance abuse is to decrease the risk of relapse.
The post-treatment of aftercare programs offers the following three aspects:
- Education
- Focus
- Prevention
To build a strong, successful foundation in recovery, individuals need to focus on their needs and goals. The primary purpose of addiction aftercare programs for substance abuse is to assist addicts to get back to living a healthy and wholesome life despite any shifts or changes that may occur.
Aftercare programs for substance abuse can instill daily and weekly routines and activities to focus on such as the following:
- Building a support system
- Choosing appropriate sponsorship
- Developing weekly routines
- Recovery writing and journaling
- Developing a daily routine
- Career counseling
What Are The Components Of A Successful Aftercare Plan?
There are countless activities and resources available geared toward aftercare programs. The factors vary depending on each need and the options that a treatment facility offers. As the individual reaches the end of their treatment plan, the case manager will sit with them to develop an individualized plan.
The Components
- Transitioning into an intensive outpatient program
- Attending individual or group therapy sessions
- Moving into a sober living arrangement
- Checking in regularly with a case manager and counselor
- Attending recovery meetings such as 12-step meetings
- Participating in the alumni program at the treatment facility
- Establishing a set support system to lean on during treatment
- Find a sober mentor or sponsor
How Do Aftercare Programs Promote Life-Long Recovery And Relapse Prevention?
As stated previously, an addiction aftercare program is highly effective for assisting in preventing relapse. Unfortunately, setbacks are a possibility. Setbacks are defined as behaviors that can lead an individual to relapse. When an individual views a setback as a normal part of the recovery process, the individual is quickly able to assess what went wrong, and take steps to correct it.
After the individual lands back on their road to recovery, they find themselves more motivated and equipped than ever before. As the person struggling becomes more confident in their sobriety, they are more able to cope with high-risk situations. The aftercare treatment plan will begin to reflect the changes of the individual.
As time goes on, the individual might not require an aftercare program, but that doesn’t mean recovery is complete. The individual should engage in mindful living daily which will become the cornerstone of the following aspects:
- What the individual learns about themself
- Self-identity
- Self-efficacy
- Success
Addiction and relapse after aftercare will have a major impact to contribute to long-term recovery. The more engaged the addict is in their aftercare treatment plan during the early months of recovery, the better equipped the individual will be for their future.
What Other Services Are Available In Aftercare?
Once the aftercare treatment program is completed, stress and physical challenges might present themselves. By obstacles appearing, the risk of relapse becomes greater. It’s vital to keep in mind that an aftercare program is a post-treatment support system designed to promote proper management of situations that can lead to a commitment to recovery and relapse.
The other services available in aftercare are the following:
- Programs that reward continued abstinence such as contingency management
- Continued involvement in 12 steps or similar programs
- Self-monitoring programs
- Telephone follow-up meeting or other motivational interviewing
