DETOX CENTERS IN TEXAS

With our specialized, substance-specific approach, permanent recovery is possible throughout detox centers in Texas.

According to the CDC, in 2018, there were approximately 1402 opioid-related drug overdoses in Texas. Detox centers are the prime spots to initiate the marathon of addiction treatment.

After recognizing your disorder, the detox process is vital to the early stages of recovery. This evaluation period is targeted to determine the severity of withdrawal symptoms with each patient. Detox in Austin should be efficient and flexible for those struggling with addiction, especially during these challenging times of isolation.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DRUG WITHDRAWAL

Quitting drugs or alcohol isn’t as simple as stopping the substance use. Quitting “cold turkey” can be dangerous. Different substances produce different withdrawal symptoms for varying lengths of time. Common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Cravings
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased heart rate
  • Body aches
  • Headache.
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Disorientation
  • Difficulty concentrating.

Withdrawal symptoms are different for everyone, but with a proper combination of medication and counseling, they can be overcome and recovery can begin. Although non-lethal, these symptoms can increase discomfort and might directly influence the rate of relapse. Relapse is noted as the return to the use of an addictive substance after attempting to quit.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING DRUG DETOX

Addictive substances change the way the brain processes and manages emotions and interfere with the brain’s pleasure and reward centers, resulting in cravings and dependency. Once dependence forms, withdrawal symptoms will set in when the substance is removed.

The severity and length of withdrawal depend on several factors, including:

  • The severity of the addiction.
  • Type of substance used.
  • Length of use.
  • Method of use.
  • Amount used.
  • Physical and mental health.
  • Family history.

Withdrawal from different types of substances, such as stimulants (cocaine), depressants (alcohol), and opioids (heroin), produces different side effects, requiring specialized approaches to detox. At Makana Path, we understand the physical and emotional challenges of detox, as well as substance-specific challenges, and create highly individualized detox plans that make the process as safe and comfortable as possible.

I'M PREGNANT, CAN I DETOX?

Detoxing while pregnant could be a life-saving experience for the mother and child who have been exposed to long-term substance use. The connection between the mother and child is directly related to factors such as hormones, stress, diet, and medication.

If you are pregnant and have struggled with addictive substances, you are not alone. According to a study by the CDC, as many as 1 out of 10 pregnant women have reported alcohol use. The use of such substances directly impacts the fetus in numerous harmful ways. Substances like cocaine, marijuana, and opioids are commonly used with those struggling with addiction while pregnant.

THE RISK OF FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME

For example, fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition where the child experiences withdrawal-like symptoms without the presence of alcohol in their system. Birth defects and premature birth are common occurrences during alcohol use in pregnancy. According to the National Institute on Health (NIH), women are at a higher risk of developing a substance use disorder during their reproductive years (18-44).

Medical detox is highly encouraged to prevent further complications with the patient. Medical detox is more well-rounded for the best care, with 24/7 support from trained staff. The medication used during detox can have lasting effects on the mother, so it’s important to find a reputable treatment program for yourself.

The challenges of substance use met with pregnancy can be a confusing time for the mother. Abruptly stopping use (or quitting cold turkey) can be just as dangerous because the stress factors of withdrawals on the body can impact the child. Detox centers are a great resource for those struggling, however, behavioral therapy should be the next step to promote healthier coping skills. This is an opportunity to dig deep and provide an alternative lifestyle for yourself and your child. Asking for help is a sign of strength, especially if you have a support system willing to listen.

IS HOME DETOX WORTH IT?

Home detox is the process of removing addictive toxins from your body through a structured approach outside of a facility. So, you’ve been drinking since you were 13. Now, 20 years later, you’ve found that you can’t function without a glass of your favorite vodka mix every morning. The thought of inpatient treatment causes you to sweat. This approach is better suited for alcohol dependence. Home detox is available but is it worth it?

The severity of your addiction plays a major factor in the efficiency of home detox. Not every substance use is the same, especially with frequency, type of substance, and length of use. If your withdrawal symptoms are not as severe, then home detox might be an option for you.

A “social detox” might be necessary to prevent triggers from entering this stage.

A safe environment is pressing for a successful home detox. It’s recommended to pursue a detox center for medical professionals to treat you properly and answer any questions. The risks of relapse and worsened withdrawals increase during a home detox session.

Home detox is not recommended if you’ve experienced:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Serious illness
  • Withdrawals, seizure

It’s suggested that if you do decide to home detox, it’s more effective to remove the addictive substance from your residence, have a support system, and clear your schedule. Eating small but nutritious meals and maintaining your hydration will be key to a successful detox. Keeping a drinking diary and breathalyzer are the most consistent ways of measuring use, making sure you lower each dosage as time progresses. The withdrawal symptoms can kick in and make the process more difficult.

WHAT IS RAPID DETOX? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Rapid detox is the process of flushing the body of addictive substances in a shorter full detox window (4-6 hours), compared to a normal detox (maximum of 10 days). The patient is sedated with anesthesia and administered naltrexone (an opiate blocker) to force the body to detox. General anesthesia is given to the patient to subdue them from the draining effects of withdrawals.  Naltrexone works by forcing the body into withdrawals by clearing the body of opioids. However, the patient may experience withdrawal symptoms, which doesn’t make the process as effective through a typical session at a detox center.

Even after the rapid detox has been completed, the patient’s body must rest to deal with the barrage of changes happening to the body. The stress on the body can cause multiple organ failures, among other complications. People who often go through rapid detox trade one addiction for another. In comparison to a detox center, rapid detox could have side effects such as:

  • Delirium
  • Nausea
  • Heart Failure
  • Coma
  • Sedative Addiction
  • High body temperature
  • Anxiety and paranoia

With prices varying from $2,000 to $10,000, rapid detox is not a solution for treating the root of the addiction. Rapid detox is not a safe measure to take to combat the fight against addiction. According to USA Today, six people died over a 7-year period where 2,350 patients were treated in a New Jersey rapid detox facility.

There are currently no peer-reviewed studies that suggest the safety of rapid detox. The risks heavily outweigh the benefits of such a process. Rapid detox is not effective towards mental health issues and relapse. Those who are struggling with co-occurring disorders are not suited for rapid detox.

Inpatient treatment or partial hospitalization options are available for those in need of extensive care; providing on-the-clock medical care and therapies. If inpatient treatment is not an affordable option, outpatient treatment programs are an alternative that’s adaptable to the patient’s needs.
