Many people seeking addiction treatment want to know how long it will take for them to achieve sobriety. While the traditional answer has been to start with a 30-day program and adjust to further levels of care according to your needs and the progress you have made, the National Institute on Drug Abuse cautions that “good outcomes are contingent on adequate treatment length,” and recommends longer, more comprehensive addiction plans for best results. What are the benefits of this approach?
When Are Longer Programs Better?
No two people with a substance misuse issue are alike. Though 30 days is often enough time for people to complete a detox program and make it through the initial challenging phases of withdrawal symptoms, not everyone will make the same amount of progress with their mental health and stability. After a month in rehab, many people will only have scratched the surface of the root causes of their addiction and other behavioral issues. Others may not feel their sobriety is well-established enough to return to their normal daily life without the structure, support and accountability rehab provides. To protect your newfound sobriety and avoid a relapse, you should not rush your recovery process. There’s no such thing as shortcuts in sobriety. If you are in any way unsure about your ability to stay on the right track after returning home, leaving treatment before you’re ready can set yourself up for failure. A return to active addiction is a genuine risk of re-entering the “real world” too early.
What Is Sober Living?
Sober living is a concept that helps bridge the gap between treatment and full independence. It provides an environment with discipline and structure, which allows you to transition back into your regular routine gradually, and on your terms. At Segue Recovery Support, we founded our treatment program on the philosophy that people who are new to sobriety often need extended care to help them learn to cope with life’s challenges and manage their emotions. We believe addiction is a chronic illness, and as with any other such disease, you can learn to manage its symptoms and reduce your risk of a relapse. We offer three levels of sober living.
- High-accountability sober living: This option is ideal for people who are transitioning out of inpatient care and would like to move directly into a distraction-free environment where they can focus fully on getting better and honing their recovery skills. In this residential setting, you can immerse yourself in the culture of recovery by participating in regular 12-step meetings and undergoing periodic drug and alcohol screenings.
- Traditional sober living: Residents in this level of care are required to work or attend school while benefiting from a balance of structure and independence. This gender-specific option engenders a sense of community among residents and provides them with a sober support network that can continue to benefit them for years.
- Graduate-style apartments: We have geared our apartment-style sober living toward people who have achieved stability in their recovery and can live independently, but still desire the accountability that can come from being surrounded by a community that helps you protect your sobriety.
