Happy hour is not so happy for those of us in recovery. In fact, it’s simply a bad idea when you’re in recovery. But how can you stay social, sober and shake off a little stress? Luckily, there are a bunch of sober activities that you can enjoy with your co-workers – it just takes a little creativity. These ideas will help you get started:
- Get your art on. Many local art galleries and museums stay open late one day a week. Call around and gather a group of coworkers for a night of art and culture. If this isn’t possible, you could also host a sober arts and crafts party. It’s the perfect season to paint some pumpkins after a stressful day at work.
- Head to a meditation “happy hour.” With more and more people discovering the mind-blowing benefits of meditation, it’s not too surprising that many local studios are offering “happy hour” classes as an alternative to bar hopping. If this isn’t available in your area, ask your manager if you could use the conference room to host your own version.
- Begin a book club. Reading is a great recovery activity, so think about starting a book club and sharing the health benefits with your co-workers. Strive to meet up once a month so you can check 12 new books off your list each year. Just be mindful of what you’re reading and make sure the topics aren’t triggers for you.
- Sign up for an adult sports league. What sport did you once enjoy or always want to try? Soccer, softball, basketball, skiing? Whichever you pick there’s bound to be a local adult league. Gather up some colleagues and join a team or start your own.
