Weekly Focal Point

“Embrace today, discard yesterday and have confidence in tomorrow.”

Nightly Review

“When we retire at night, we constructively review our day. Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid? Do we owe an apology? Have we kept something to ourselves which should be discussed with another person at once? Were we kind and loving toward all? What could we have done better? Were we thinking of ourselves most of the time? Or were we thinking of what we could do for others, of what we could pack into the stream of life? But we must be careful not to drift into worry, remorse or morbid reflection, for that would diminish our usefulness to others. After making our review we ask God’s forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should be taken.” – pg. 86

In Step 11 we must observe a nightly review and take a look at the day which we are about to put to rest. We ask ourselves some simple questions and based on our answers we create a road map for tomorrow. It is important that we review our day in a manner that is constructive as we alcoholics have the tendency to be very hard on ourselves. After all, becoming heavily concerned with today’s affairs does us no good unless we intend on learning from them for tomorrow. Though this is a simple step, the nightly review routine is an easy process to miss if we are not careful. Take a moment for yourself, ask yourself some simple questions and become prepared for tomorrow.

Questions for Our Consideration

  1. Have I created time for myself to do a nightly review?
  2. Am I willing to reflect on today and prepare for tomorrow?
  3. Will I assign myself certain corrective measures so that I can be of maximum service tomorrow?
