Step Four

Weekly Focal Point

“We took stock honestly. First, we searched out the flaws in our make-up which caused our failure. Being convinced that self, manifested in various ways, was what had defeated us, we considered its common manifestations.”

~ Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous pg. 64 ~

Twelve Step Series: Step 4

Step Four: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

“The process of our personal improvement began with Step Four, in which we tackled the work of getting to know ourselves as we really were. Maybe we’d been so preoccupied with thinking about what others were doing, especially the alcoholic, that we never realized how much our own actions needed examining. It was inspiring to realize that we had the ability to become more confident, competent, and mature. Self-discovery was a satisfying goal to look forward to and well worth every bit of effort we put into it. We tried to remember that this was not a single-handed, personal effort – we asked for and accepted help of a Higher Power every step of the way. We no longer wanted to work alone. Step Four was a tool for brining to light the true source of our problems. As we dug deeper to discover just how our shortcomings had frustrated us, we began to see what we wanted changed in us, not in anybody else. We gradually learned how many of our difficulties were of our own making and could not be blamed on fate, bad luck, or the selfishness and stubbornness of other people.”

Considerations for the Week

  1. Am I willing to take an honest inventory to discover what has been blocking me from peace and serenity in my own life?
  2. Is it possible that my troubles cannot be solved on the basis of self will and that I will need to rely on the help of my Higher Power and spiritual principles to navigate this path?
  3. Will I pray to have an open mind about the process of examining my own shortcomings rather than focusing on the shortcomings connected to my addicted loved one?
