The Ten Laws of Boundaries Series
Law #3: The Law of Power
One key to serenity in your life is dependent upon the ability to determine what you can and cannot change. When we engage in the delusion of power over others and their behavior it can produce chaos and discord. This is often present when addiction is woven into the fabric of the family system. Using tools such as the serenity prayer, we can begin to understand what we do have the power to change, ourselves, and what we do not have the power to change, others. We can then implement healthy boundaries in our relationships with the proper motive of not allowing others destructive patterns to govern our decisions. It removes the need to control or punish those in our lives and use boundary setting ineffectively.
3 C’s of Al-Anon
- We didn’t CAUSE it
- We can’t CONTROL it
- We can’t CURE it
AND WE WON’T CONTRIBUTE TO IT TODAY
Considerations for the Week
- Will I commit to inviting my Higher Power into the process of setting boundaries?
- Can I implement the serenity prayer into my daily living? Does this guidance lay the framework for the decisions I make with my family members and others today?
- Will I begin to pray for the proper motive in setting boundaries, asking for the discernment to see this exercise is about me and not others?
