STEP FIVE
Weekly Focal Point
“We pocket our pride and go to it, illuminating every twist of character, every dark cranny of the past. Once we have taken this step, withholding nothing, we are delighted. We can look the world in the eye. We can be alone at perfect peace and ease.”
~ Big Book, pg. 75~
Step Five
The process of getting sober is about more than what we have lost or the dark places we have gone to. Though those are important experiences, we have learned time and time again that just those memories will not keep us sober. When we cling to those old ideas, those memories, the feeling of shame floods in and we cannot truly be of service to those around us. We have been given another chance in the present, and the present is the only time we can ever truly live in.
Through the process of sharing our fifth steps with someone we trust, we grow and gain awareness. That is the person that we were – not the person we have to be today. If we continually allow ourselves to sink into morbid reflection of self-pity, then we will not be able to look at the world right in front of our eyes that is full of opportunity. We are people who have lived in dark places, but that does not mean that today we cannot live in the sunshine of the spirit.
Questions for Our Consideration
- When talking about my past, am I using it to gain the confidence of another alcoholic, or am I telling it for my own ego?
- Am I currently sitting in morbid reflection about what is on my inventory? Is doing this helping me grow?
- Am I using the awareness I gained in my 5th Step, in my everyday life when things crop up?
